There aren't as many bands I want to see this year (compared to last year), and the one day I DO really want to go (Saturday), I'm having my birthday show in Seattle. Bummer.

I won't set foot in the Viaduct again.  Total pricks to me and my band.  I'm not down with that in a scene.  Basketball shorts don't mean you can talk shit.

Because Broadway Calls are awesome!  Also, because they used to be in Countdown to Life, which gives them hardcore cred.

Broadway Calls and The Menzingers both have crazy hardcore scene cred. I don't completely know how it works, but I know that when a hardcore kid talks to me about pop-punk, they mean bands like Set Your Goals.

There is at least one person who co-runs/owns the Viaduct that's really into pop-punk. I've never seen a New Found Glory collection like this kid's, it's insane. But yeah, they do book their share of pop-punk there, and they're starting to integrate it into Rainfest, I think.

they play/tour with hardcore bands, so hardcore kids get into them. you guys seem to think really lowly of hardcore kids and i think you guys need to re-evaluate. set your goals sucks. i have never in my life heard a hardcore kids talk shit on punks.

yes there are shitty hardcore but if you guys have NWHC a chance i think you would see that we are one of the most accepting hardcore scenes in the country.

Most of the people here do, and that's not going to happen. People here are old and set in their ways. I wish it wasn't that way either, just telling you not to get your hopes up.

i have known these guys for a long time, and i have never heard of them being assholes to bands unless the band has done something shitty.

ive heard of them pulling shit. and i know many a person who is friends with them since my radio station is pretty much their #1 supporter. you cant runa  credible venue treating people that way.

also, i think that has absolutely NOTHING to do with anyone's opinion of NW Hardcore scene, though, considering they do tons of punk shows. what you dont understand is that the problem people have has to do with the stereotypical hardcore kid, not with you or any individual personally. we can all kick it, it will be awesome, but i cant tell you how many judgmental pricks i have met in that scene. i know because i have worked at two radio stations where the scenes are very active and have had many friends involved with it. ive had to deal with kids from that scene on many occasions and had to deal with the self-righteous gradiose bullshit. kids talking shit to me and my friends who are their friends too. forcing separate birthday parties and whatnot. what it comes down to is this: on a personal level its all good. on a scene level, until we feel more welcome, why would we come? this is why we are here doing this...to open it up to everyone and have people like you come on here and be like "hey im fucking cool so come meet my cool friends" just like we would do to you.

also, its not limited to hardcore. i sure as hell have never felt welcome at a crust punk show. sorry that i shower, my bad.

i should probably go to this show. and you all should too.

I can forward you some e-mails from a dude that works or worked there named Zach that would change your mind.  That guy's a moron, and shouldn't be involved in something that can be so awesome.  Also there were some SEVERE money problems that are business between me and the booker there.  Nothing personal there, but that only adds to the point that I've got a terrible temper, and I'm not going into the Viaduct for fear of repercussions of my actions.

Yesa, I'm old but I'm not set in my way. I first came into punk during the first wave of hardcore, early 80's. So at hart I'm a hard core kid. But my musical tastes have expanded quite bit since then. I don't look down on hardcore kids but I do wish they'd expand their horizons a bit. There much more to music than loud fast rules. I have however had many, and I do mean many, hardcore kids bag on me or my bands because I/we don't fit into what their preception of "punk" is.

Or when the soundman pulls the plug on you two songs into the set because he doesn't like your music?  That takes some 'hardcore' balls.

I don't care about whether someones hardcore or whatever.  That doesn't matter to me.  Punk rock is punk rock.  However, I have been shunned and fucked with by enough Straight Edge and hardcore kids over the years to be instantly wary of them.

Yeah.  You're right.  It's a cop out.  You know exactly what you're talking about.

Edit:  you want to talk about a cop out, talk to your brave soundman who avoided my questions on why we got cut off after 2 songs, then wrote un provoked e-mails for weeks afterwards talking about how I'm lucky he didn't 'throw down'.   What a joke.  And you wonder why people pass judgement on hardcore kids like that.

Also Jesse, I just wanted to make sure you knew that I'm not slagging on you.  I don't know you, you seem like your intentions are good.  I'm just not going into the Viaduct.  I don't care if other people do, I think it's a good venue, and I hope people are a lot cooler now than they were in my experience.

That Zack dude though.  He can eat a nut.

I like going to hardcore shows every once in a while, Broadway Calls are extremely pop though and I can't imagine hardcore kids liking them.

But what do I know...

Most of the kids who are part of that Viaduct hardcore scene are way into New Found Glory.

Unrelated to your post, but in relation to this conversation, I finally feel like sharing something about the Viaduct.

I started posting on their board right when it was made. I wanted a place to promote my hardcore band, and to meet some new people. From the get-go I was generally basically ignored because I didn't live in Tacoma (they have some fierce Tacoma pride) and because I wasn't straight edge. Then my band was invited to play "NW Heavy Fest" in January with a bunch of other great bands. We of course jumped at the opportunity. When the show finally rolled around, there was basically no one at the show. The bands were playing to each other. Luckily there were like 12 bands so it kind of looked like people were there, but not anyone that payed to get in. Needless to say the bands didn't get paid, but whatever. We had fun (even though I was severely harassed by their sound guy [not Zack] for making a really dumb anti-christian inside joke on stage, but that's a whole other story), and that's all we cared about. By the next day on their board, all the people who run the venue were talking shit about the bands for "not promoting the show," and blaming the bands for the poor attendance. Of course they didn't take into consideration that most of the bands playing weren't from Tacoma, and I talked to a few of the other bands and NONE of us saw a single poster ANYWHERE in Tacoma for the show. Not to mention the fact that the Viaduct didn't even bother promoting it on their MySpace until the day before the show. So yeah, I have a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth about the Viaduct itself. And then to top it all off, I quit posting on their board because of a certain individual (not naming names) who basically bullied me off the board. Which I feel ridiculous about, because the dude's younger than me and in some crappy band. But for a while he just followed me around and any time I made a post, he would make some remark like, "don't even listen to this guy, he's bullshit" or "don't listen to this guy, he's a fucking joke." When I asked him what his problem was with me, he only stated it was because of my "bullshit between-song banter" at Heavy Fest. The only time I spoke between songs then was to thank the other bands, and to make my silly "anti-christian moshing" joke.

So anyway, yeah. I was already pretty sure my band would never play the Viaduct again, but now I guess I just solidified it. Oh well.
