Wearing dresses to shows
« on: September 27, 2011, 02:22:41 PM »

I've never worn a dress to a show before (except for The Weirdest Toasters Show Ever), but I know other ladies do.  I've started wearing dresses more in the rest of my life, though, so I'm considering maybe wearing a dress to a show some time.  It seems like a terrible idea, like something waiting to go wrong.  So I'm wondering, from ladies who wear dresses and skirts, any suggestions?  Or should I stop being so fucking neurotic and just do it and get over myself?

I think you're being neurotic.  You're a grown woman, you should know how to handle yourself looking pretty.  Shouldn't be an issue.

My female friends wear dresses and skirts all the time to shows, often mini-skirts. That seems normal to me. If you're gonna jump around in the pit and are worried someone is gonna get a flash if you fall over, wear some tights or something.

I think someone should wear whatever they feel most comfortable with at a show. If you are concerned about a pit, don't wear it. But,otherwise,I assume you are going to a event to enjoy the music/drinks and not to make a fashion statement. Those who worry about fashion faux-pas at a punk/metal show are worrying un-necessarily or are perhaps going to a show in Georgetown where sadly, style is more important then substance.

Okay, I was meaning more logistically, like is there a length past which a skirt will inevitably be damaged, that kind of thing.

Id say go ahead and wear what ever you want!  I just wouldn't recommend crowd surfing in a mini skirt, I never understood the chicks who do that because 9 times out of 10 they end up showing the whole crowd and the band their vagina.

I think with the occasional post from the pickle, sunquist might be the only gal to even post on here anymore. But I think you SHOULD wear dresses to shows. But like SAUCE said, dont crowd surf unless you dont mind showing off your piss clam.

Kayla is on here too.....I don't know if I could even imagine her in a dress though.  Maybe a gaudy 80's prom dress or something.

I used to wear a kilt (real kilt, fuck utilikilts) to shows, so, I kind of have something to say here. Solid underwear is a must for crowdsurfing, not that i did much of that, but spills to the floor proved to me that my rattiest "horse-out-of-the-barn" skivvies weren't optimal. Don't wear anything dry clean only. That's just asking for a beer and vomit wave to hit you. It would seem like anything long enough to be stepped on would be a bad idea too. Also, any thing that can accidentally be pulled down easy is always a bad idea. I saw a lot of hardcore kids flashing their junk without wanting to (So that leaves out my friend Dustin who did it on purpose) in the sweatpants days.

Yeah, Tyler either needs to come back, or someone needs to let the ladies know that Tyler isn't here anymore...one way or the other.

*ahem*

logistically speaking, it depends on the type of show and whether you plan on running around in the pit & dancing. short or tight skirts are easy to keep close to your body so they don't get stepped on if you fall down, but if you want to wear something not super tight just wear something solid underneath so you're not flashing anyone. bloomers are awesome too! I wish I had a pair of them with the lacy ruffles on the butt. they're super adorable.

I have worn Lip Service spandex pants with nothing over them. I regretted this in the pit,as I had parts of the front torn off and had to walk up Stark (in PDX) with friend to get home. I think some people(who like 17 year old punk boys, which I was at the time)liked it. But,since I wasn't trying to make $$$$ on Stark,it was embarassing. And cold. Think it was December. I wouldn't wear anything to a show that can be pulled down or torn. As for ruined clothing,as are any boots I get a Metro. This is a risk one must consider.I have ruined some fairly expensive footwear in pits.To me,a pair of $225 docs is a lot. Cleaning costs........maybe. But,really aside from beer throwing, what could really happen to ones clothes?Easy to avoid vomit and few bleed near you at shows.Top hats are the one thing I am most careful with, aside from prescription colo tinted glasses. Anything else, well,if I were THAT concerned,I would find a new interest besides punk/metal shows!!!!!

Are Docs $225 now? I've never paid over $120 for a pair. I now buy them used, usually off Ebay or at a Thrift Store, already broken in and in the $40 or less range.

Okay, this is advice I can take to the bank (although maybe not the part about bloomers).  I will try this out, and I suppose if I don't like it, I don't have to do it again.

Thanks everyone!

Sorry gals, I've been busy hanging out with a boy this past week.
Chris, you've never seen me in a dress / skirt? I'm confused since I only own 2 pairs of pants vs. many dresses and skirts. I do wear jeans a lot cus they're easy but there was a couple of years where I wore nothing but skirts. Currently wearing one now.

When was the last time any of us on this board crowd surfed? Or went to a show where crowd surfing was prevalent? Those are the same kinds of shows where girls get on their friend's shoulders and flash the crowd / band / whatever. So yea, girls who crowd surf in skirts are either naive or know exactly what they're getting into.

So you're asking about your clothes being damaged? Many of the skirts I wear already have paint stained on them or holes or tears in some part. They're all thrifted so it doesn't really matter to me if they get beat up. The part that I'd rather not get beat up are my knees. But jeans vs. exposed knees isn't that much better. You're still gonna get banged up if you fall or get fallen on.

I almost always wear mine with knee high or over the knee high socks. Only when it's really really hot out will I go with crew or ankle socks. Mostly cus my legs are blindingly white but also because I love socks! And they help keep you warm.

My biggest issue with skirts / dresses is that often they don't have pockets. I own a few that do, but 90% they are designed for you to carry a purse which I really rarely do anymore. I stopped using them mostly because of all the useless shit that you end up toting around in them. I have scaled down my needs to just the essentials and all of those fit in my vest so I don't have to worry about having pockets on my lower body garments. And when it's hoody season, like now, there's a few more pockets. If I plan on buying a record or have something larger I need to carry around with me I'll bring a bag, but for the most part everything I need is worn on me which really helps prevent loosing anything important.

And one more note on not getting your clothes destroyed, I only wear my nice vintage dresses to ska shows where I know I'll only be sweating in them at the very worst.

Yes. A pair of 20-eye steel toed Doc Martens cost that much at Experience. They were the only boots available entirely assembled in the UK. The newer Docs seem to be less durable and I can easily justify spending that amount for boots which may last several years. I had a pair of 20-eyes that lasted for almost 10 years once. Sadly,I got a pair of 20 eye non steel toes which tore near the seam in a few months.Buffalo Exchange sometimes has good prices on boots, but if they are in good condition, the difference in price between new and used is not much.

So you're asking about your clothes being damaged?

Damage is part of it. I'm not dumb enough to wear anything really fragile, but since this is a new thing, I don't want to miss anything really obvious that everyone else figured out when they were twelve.  That said, it seems like skirts and dresses are more restrictive?  I don't know.  Maybe they're not, but I already know I'm being neurotic about this.
