It has nothing to do with the left or the right, it has to do with ALL OF US!  The 99 percent of the population who makes it go round being tired of corporate greed and how we have let it ruin not only our country but the world.

You know that politician you support? yeah, he gets his money from major corporations (unless you support Ron Paul)....you know why nothing major ever changes? because major corporations wont let it happen unless they can make money off of it.

Our government is completely corrupt and most people are completely apathetic to all of it...

"Occupy ___________" is a way for you to get out and be with the other 99 percent and learn and share from each other and to stand up against the rich and show our numbers.  We can't let a few people keep the rest of us down.

It doesn't matter if you are democrat or republican, political parties are obsolete in this

The problem is: the protesters here don't even know what they're protesting, outside of the fact that they don't like Big Business and Corporate Greed. Many are just stopping by to protest for a few hours and then leaving.

How is a protest supposed to change anything if they can't even concisely state what they're protesting?

Besides: I doubt the big companies are going to suddenly go "Oh, they're right. We're totally screwing everyone" just because a bunch of people go and sit in a park with signs.

Just saying.

I'm happy to have anyone combat the endless stream of hateful Republican propaganda out there and show that there are people that think differently.

I walk by westlake daily.  I guess it's easier to express your rage by sharing Facebook posts then actually show up.   Also if people didn't dress like Guy Fawkes or 4Chan script kiddies they might be taken a little more seriously.

Yes. Ted Rall has a excellent article on this. If people who claim to represent 99% of non-corporate america or whatever they are saying actually DRESSED like those they claim to represent, maybe they would have support ,instead of apathy at best and ridicule at worst. I have gone to many demos with a foot high mohawk and spiky leather. But,I don't claim to represent 99% of any community.

Related - Bank Transfer Day

http://www.facebook.com/?ref=logo#!/event.php?eid=281139538577206

• Open an account with a Credit Union
• Transfer your funds to the new account (online or in person) by 11/05
• Follow your bank's procedures to close your account

To find a credit union near you: http://www.findacreditunion.com/
...
Together we can ensure that these banking institutions will ALWAYS remember the 5th of November!! If the 99% removes our funds from the major banking institutions on or by this date, we will send a clear message and give the 1% a taste of the fear that we experience every day when we aren't able to pay for our rent, food, medication, utilities, student loans, etc.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
• Invite your friends
• Post to your timeline
• Post to your local occupation movement's FB page

WHY ARE WE BOYCOTTING?
The Durbin Amendment is an add-on to the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (Public Law No. 111-203), signed into law by President Barack Obama on July 21, 2010. The Act allows the Federal Reserve to regulate debit card interchange fees of banks with over $10 billion in assets. Over the summer, the Fed released the final rule on the matter by limiting debit card interchange fees to a maximum of 21’ per transaction. In response, these "major banks" have decided that beginning early 2012 any consumer with less than $20,000 in combined accounts will be charged a monthly $3-5 fee if they use their debit card at any point during the month. This is a blatant attack on the 99% that cannot & will not be tolerated. In a stand of solidarity, on November 5th we will transfer our money & close our accounts with these major banking institutions to take our business to credit unions (or local banks if a credit union isn't available). Since #OccupyWallStreet began, these banks are donating our money (and money they've made with our money) to law enforcement agencies to heap abuse on our brothers & sisters. NO LONGER.

FACTS/FIGURES:
• With the Durbin Amendment in affect, banks will still make 19’ profit per processed transaction [*1]
• The average consumer uses his/her debit card 24 times per month [*2]
• Without the additional fee, Bank of America stands to turn a $3,228,480,000 annual profit from its 59 million customers' debit card transactions [*3]
• Without the additional fee, Wells Fargo stands to turn a $2,626,560,000 annual profit from its 48 million customers' debit card transactions [*4]
• Without the additional fee, JP Morgan (Chase) stands to turn a $4,924,800,000 annual profit from its 90 million customers' debit card transactions [*5]

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.  However, the banks actually have me so cowed that I'm afraid something bad will happen to me, personally, if I try to close a checking account I only opened six months ago.  I'm not afraid something will happen to my money, I'm afraid something will happen to me.  Like, when I leave the bank lobby after closing my account, nets will drop on me and the floor will open into a chute and I'll never be seen again.  I'm not kidding.  Weirdly enough, I'm not afraid of debt collectors at all.

Sadly, this is nowhere near true. There are millions of people who support Republican/Tea Party/Right Wing causes because of a misguided and misplaced "moral imperative" despite the fact that they are being completely screwed by these groups' economic policies. Visit large parts of the south and midwest where people are barely getting by, and you'll see this almost immediately.

I've been meaning to make this switch for years and am sort of ashamed that I'm still chugging along with the BoA account I opened when I moved to Seattle in 2002. I'm going to get on this shit.

Ogre and Mickey were saying BECU is rad. Does anyone else have any personal experience with specific credit unions in Seattle? There's a branch of Alaska USA fairly near my apartment, though just from looking over their websites, BECU seems better.

I have BECU and love it.  The interest rates on their accounts is in general higher than most.  If you get an account there, tell them I sent you and we'll both get $25!!!

Don't be afraind, use the buddy system. Have someone posted outside the back watching you at all time. You can do this.

Ive been a member of Watermark/Sound Credit Union for about 35 years. They're totaly awesome. https://www.watermarkcu.org/
The only dealings with a bank I still have is my mortgage. I was thinking last night that I need to look into doing a refi with my CU.

Now we will all fight for the $25 credit!

I too use BECU. The good: no fees, no overdraft fees it seems too (I think they give you more slack anyway), insanely high 6% interest on your first $500 in savings and checking, about the lowest car loan rates you can find, no debit fees at not only BECU machines, but any credit union machine (I used the Alaska Credit Union debit machine at the local Safeway all the time). And their ATMs are awesome, you don't have to use deposit slips, they read checks and count bills when you make deposits.

The only downside is most of their locations don't have tellers, you have to be comfortable using ATMs for everything. And this can make it hard to cash something like a savings bond where you need a teller. But that's a very little caveat, otherwise they are awesome. And super nice too.

My mortgage is through my credit union (I use WSECU and BECU). But I'm seriously thinking of refying with the rates so low right now. Super punk subject fitting the occupy Seattle thread!

I did my weekly check of this board.

I'm going to the Occupy Hartford march later.

I'll let everyone know what it was like.

The other day when I walked by Westlake I only witnessed a bunch of dirty kids chanting "fuck the police."  It was pretty hard for me to take this Occupy Seattle thing seriously.

That Bank Transfer Day thing is interesting.  Similarly, I always tell people that if they don't like how much professional atheletes make, then stop watching the damn sport... and get your friends to do the same.  If you don't like the price you have to pay for something, then don't pay for it.  However, I feel like people's response to the banks action (i.e. charging a monthly fee) seems a little off.

"This is a blatant attack on the 99% that cannot & will not be tolerated."

It's not a "blatant attack," its an example of why the government should try and regulate so many parts of the capitalist economy.  When you limit what a bank can charge for a service, they're just gonna find a different way to get that revenue.  Don't take it so personally.  Also, those "profit" figures are not profits, that is contribution that helps pay for fixed costs (e.g. rent, salaries, etc.).  Before the Fed limited the amount a bank could charge, that cost was simply passed onto the consumer anyway-- it gets built into the price of the good you are purchasing, so you pay for it in the end.

Anyway, just my thoughts.  I think its definitely the right action though if you don't think its fair - better to do something about it then sit around and bitch.

Yes. I do not feel represented by anyone who I have seen involved in the protests. If someone wants to gather with a group and get stoned/drunk,that is their business.But......lets not pretend it is political. Also, when someone is chanting the same tired slogans that were stale 40 years ago,it is difficult to take them seriously.

The Seattle crew has been fairly good about getting people to try to remain sober or at least not drink and do drugs within the group, which is a very difficult task....I usually have no problem smoking weed anywhere, but even I refrained from doing so because I can see it making the group weaker than it already has been at times.

some dumb shit dude was holding a sing that said "I dont remember why I am here...got any weed?" and I felt inspired to let him know how ignorant it made him look and how he might as well just go home...

I'm really surprised at Seattle's apathy towards the whole thing, everywhere else seems amazing....

anyways, heading back down after dinner...see any of you there?

i support this occupy wall street thing.

no, i haven't been down there yet. personally i got burned on public protesting soon after the WTO stuff.

but i do know shit's fucked up in this country and unrestrained corporate greed is part of the problem.
i do not have any easy solutions to all of this, so i don't buy it when someone else claims to have all the answers.
the fact that these folks do not claim to have all the answers is actually refreshing to me.

maybe i'll go down there saturday
