Let bands drink on stage in Seattle!!!
« on: September 07, 2011, 10:02:21 AM »

Hey everyone!!  Lets start a grassroots movement to get this dumb law repealed.  I'm starting by tweeting Mayor Mcginn to find out what we should do!!!  Everyone harrass him @mayormcginn and let him know you want bands to be able to drink on stage!!!  #letthebandsdrink!!!  Spread the word!!

UPDATE!!!:::
Mayor McGinn wrote back with THIS:  http://www.liq.wa.gov/publications/rules/2011%20Proposed%20Rules/Notice%20to%20stakeholders%2011-06%20Entertainers%20Drinking%20While%20Performing-CR%20102.pdf

Everyone should email: rules@liq.wa.gov  by October 21st with their side of the story on this!!!  Should we put together a form letter that we can all use and change to fit ourselves?  This is a law I want to take a stand against!!

There's nothing he can do since it is a state administrative rule decided by the State Liquor Control Board. But, I suppose getting him on your side can help exert some pressure.

And DJs! It sucks DJing and not being able to sip a drink behind the turntables.

Speaking of which, Grendel, I still have your faulty mixer I used at Funhouse last year.

where are you DJing? If you are getting paid as a performer on stage- technically you are not allowed to drink 'on stage'.

In this case, he would not be "the top".  He has no part in that decision making.  Pat Kohler, Executive Director and Sharon Foster, Chairman of the Washington State Liquor Control Board would be "the top". You would also have better luck reaching out to your elected State Senator and Representatives.  Also, they would probably more responsive.  This is not a "Seattle" thing, but a whole state thing.

So what you are saying, is all the shows we don't get paid we should drink heavily?

So what would happen if that dumb redneck (from the redneck comedy tour that drinks whiskey on stage) comes to Seattle? Would he be able to drink his whiskey on stage?

By law, no.  But some venues will let it happen.

most of those guys either don't even drink, drink colored water/cola on stage, or drink way within moderation.

Dean Martin had that shtick down pat:

"Martin's reputation as a heavy drinker – a reputation perpetuated via his vanity license plates reading "DRUNKY" – he was remarkably self-disciplined.[6] He was often the first to call it a night, and when not on tour or on a film location, liked to go home to see his wife and children. Phyllis Diller has said that Martin was indeed drinking alcohol onstage and not apple juice. She also commented that although he was not drunk, he was not really sober either, but had very strict rules when it came to performances. "

Unfortunately this stupid rule is having an effect on other areas as well. It's by no means a rule here that we can't drink on stage, but several clubs I have played here in Longview have not allowed onstage drinking. I guess because they fear this rule will somehow apply to their establishment...

I didn't know about this until I got a beer when we were playing sunset, and I set it up on stage with me and when I went to take a drink it was gone. I was pissed cause I thought someone stole my beer. The bartender grabbed it from me when I wasnt' looking. haha. What a wierd rule. So is it seattle or wa. that has this rule?

We initially formed in August 2009 and began writing music as a four-piece. After a long time searching for the right front person, Sean joined the band in February 2010 to fill the slot. We all come from backgrounds of rock, DIY punk and hardcore and have all played many shows and toured in previous bands, including Anchor Down, Knifetalk, Auralust, and The Knifeswitch. We are excited to finally have this band up and running and, as Willie said, we just can't wait to get on the road again.

It's a washington state law, most bars outside of seattle don't sweat it too bad because the LCB doesn't sweat them too bad!!  PLEASE email the LCB and tell them to change this !!!

Technically no, but when the Pogues played the Showbox, Shane was both drinking and smoking on stage. I think there are times they let it slide and will deal with any consequences.

The venue is the one liable, not the promoter.

I think he was meaning that since the bands didn't get paid, no one was technically an employee of anyone.  So we could drink without care technically???
