Just in from the windy city
« on: August 25, 2011, 01:36:17 PM »

Hey everyone my name is Steve I have just moved to Seattle from Chicago. I was pretty involved in the punk community there and ran my restaurant/venue. Well things did not go as planned and I was forced to close. However Ive been getting things going here in Seattle and my restaurant finally opened up in what you would call south Seattle (I think?) I opened it up last week and doing surprisingly well for only its first week.

What I come to ask you is if anyone knows any bands that would want to come play. Oh and to sweeten the deal I would like word to get around. I invite any nw punk board member to come in for a free bacon cheeseburger and fries as long as they promise to recommend us to a friend(s) Hope to see y'all around.

OH MAN, free burger?!  Shit, now I REALLY wished I lived in Seattle.

I'm sure you'll get a bunch of dudes from here in your restaurant.  And I'm sure a lot of these bands would love to play.

You need to let us know where this restaurant is so we can come get a burger!!!

New venues are always welcome in Seattle.  Especially if you treat the bands well.  There are too many shady venues and promoters in Seattle.  If you want your name to get out, be good, serve good food, get bands drunk and paid, and you'll be okay as far as I'm concerned.  Word travels quickly with good news...

Going to have to hold on that for a bit. We have been open two days but got sort of shut down because we need another health inspection. Even tho we have already had one they lost our paperwork or we got lost in the system (bureaucratic bullshit) but what can you do. Gota do what the man says I suppose. They say they can have someone inspect us as early as tomorrow morning so if all goes well I would be more then happy to post the address. This gives my crew more then enough time to really get the restaurant decorated and I might be able to start on the stage.

Who are some of the shady people I should try to avoid. Since I'm new in town its important for me to know. In exchange I can tell you if you ever play in Chicago don't EVER work with John Manson or aka "Bad Teeth" He has a reputation for taking the door money and running off. Some bands have even tracked him down and kicked his ass but hes always found his way back into some venues.

Oh by the way ive been jamming on those songs smokejumper has on myspace. It would be rad for you guys to play when we get the green light. Il try to be in touch.

Don't let Curbside Avengers play your venue.I heard their cowbell player drinks 75% of the beer backstage and then passive//aggressively asks if there is any more. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

thanks dude...As for the shady people.  I'm not really going to be public about it, as they are shady, not necissarily evil!!!  Just stay away from pay to play, and try to pay the bands yourself instead of through promoters as the promoters are basically doing the easiest job in the world and taking from bands most of the time.  That's a good first move.

Hey thanks any way to get our name out. Is flyering big in Seattle? I know its a bit smaller city so maybe it gets the job done easier.

As for the veggie burger I do serve veggie burgers but only ones that meet my personal taste requirements. I realize that people do it for health reasons and that is totally respectable. Vegans however will not be served in my restaurant. Don't anyone take this the wrong way but most of the vegans I have ever met have been nothing but a bunch of better then you elitists. Not only that but our fries are fried in meat based oil.

I would say for most people no.  But Marty is known, and people know what he's pushing isn't (normally) garbage.

What kind of a band has a standalone cowbell player? Not only that but drinks all of the beer hahah. Really tho what about these curbside avengers or were you heckling me?

As for paying bands. I do charge a small 1-2$ dollar cover just to keep the bums out. That money all goes to the bands along with a percent of money from food and beer. I also see to it that bands get fed and properly hydrated  ;)

The percent is a GREAT perk.  I honestly HATE low door prices.  There's nothing worse than playing to a packed room and having to split $100 3 ways.  If people are coming out for shows, they should be paying for the shows.  but this is another discussion for another time!!  HAHA

Yeah. I try to take care of bands well. Other owners I have spoke with see it as a burden. I see it as an investment. If I take care of this band they talk. They will say "hey you should play steves new place he really took care of us" before you know it my place is going to be the new spot. Cheap door prices so everyone can get in. Eventually people are going to want a drink so the money comes anyway. Everybody wins in the end.

I was joking. I am the cowbell player from Curbside Avengers and you SHOULD let them play there. The cowbell is a great way to invite comments such as yours. And a few people have come to our shows because they find it difficult to believe that any punk band wold utilize this essential, yet under-rated instrument  ;D. As for keeping the bums out........I understand that no one wants people at a show who contribute nothing and do not pay cover, but you may want to consider letting people in free for the first couple of shows so they can enjoy the show, have a few drinks(are you a alcohol serving venue)?,and let others know of your location. Free shows may attract bums(though I have NEVER seen this in Seattle),but would also draw people from the neighborhood in which you are located who have nothing else to do that evening.

Let's be friends!  What was your place in Chicago called, where was it, where did you live/come from (if you say the South Side why can probably stop right here), what were your favorite Chicago bands, do you wear a hat, where do you live now, what Chicago burger would you compare most closely to your own burgers, and are you going to stock cider in your bar?

This site documents local production company scammers. I'd stay away from every promoter on this page. Also Shorty Entertainment (AKA Monster Party Productions) is a total piece of shit.

woh woh lol one at a time... Ok!

I lived in Boystown a block from the redline so transportation was easy enough.
I had a Mexican themed bar called Dos Gringos Trailer Park right by Wrigley Field. It was nice but It really was not for me. I want to get back to good ol burgers fries and beer.

Articles of Faith of course the guys from rise against were regulars at my place.

Due to my age yes I do wear a hat.
I live in what is called the Georgetown neighborhood.

The burgers are my own ^.^

As for cider only for you  ;) ;)

Okay.I am vegetarian, but understand that some vegans can be annoying with their insistence that everyone adhere to their preference. Sad that I cannot try your fries. But,will likely drop by to have a vegi-burger. Taste Of Chicago in the U-district has vegi options for almost all of their menu and I get the impression(from speaking with people who have worked there) that I may have been one of the few people to have ordered the vegi-cheese steak sub(which is excellent). Some food does not translate well to vegi/gluten free/vegan and should be left alone. But,thank you for the warning about the fries. I have been vegetarian for 25 years and get physically ill if I eat meat based products by accident.

I just moved here a few months ago, and while everything is going well, I'm still super homesick.  Don't be surprised if I try to smell the Chicago on you.  I guess I feel a little bad for never having heard of your place, but Wrigleyville always had me walking with my head down not making eye contact until I got to 1) Ian's Pizza, 2) Pick Me Up, or 3) iO.  I look forward to coming to your new place when it's open, and promise to tell all eleven people I know in Seattle who are not already on nwpunkboard!
