In what ways do you accquire your music?
« on: August 08, 2011, 07:16:07 AM »

i'm curious as to how people get their music. Do you purchase downloads online? Buy vinyl at a record store? Trade with other people? Buy touring bands CD's? Download from filesharing/torrent sites? Pick up boxes of cassettes at garage sales? Take up bands offers of free downloads? Write for a zine or do booking and wait for the submissions? Don't get new music anymore cause you hate it all? This is something i have wondered about for quite a while now. Seeing as how i'm going to be promoting again i could really use some information on how people who interact with life do things these days. Thanx.

YES to these.  But the majority of new music I get I download.  Either from a website that the band has set up or from iTunes.  I try to support bands as much as I can.

I use punk blogs for old ripped vinyl, torrent sites for mainstream stuff, buy occasional CDs online from Amazon (but I'm trying to rip and get rid of my CD collection) and then buy vinyl from bands at shows, mailorder, and websites... I hardly ever shop at record stores any more.

I always try to support the band when touring since their merch booth is their meal ticket to the next show.  Otherwise, I listen to a bunch of out of print stuff that i can usually find off of mediafire links.  Spotify has been kicking ass for me, I upgraded to premium and it has a ton of stuff not usually found anywhere else.

Bandcamp is my new personal hero.  If a band offers something for free on there, I'll usually download it and then buy whatever they have if I see them live (but since I'm usually broke, I have to budget in advance for it, and rarely buy merch spontaneously).  I'll buy mp3s off amazon (but I won't use iTunes), and I'm experimenting with Spotify, but record stores have become more trouble than they're worth.  I'd like to patronize them, but since I don't have a record player anymore and there's a much better selection of music online, they're really only there for personal interaction and recommendations.  Singles is better than anything in Chicago for that, so we'll see if I spend more time there.

This is an interesting thread.  It is really interesting to see how people acquire their music.  I personally buy vinyl.  I order it online, buy from stores, from touring bands.  I don't buy any CDs, and do not readily download "for free".  If something is way out of print and not available for legal download occasionally I will download it. I have a blog and don't really post downloads on it, but have directed to some places on the very rare occasion another blog that may.  and that is a very case by case issue.

In a related note I have been speaking with some friends about the ethics of downloading material without paying when it is up for sale.  Where do you draw the line?  Is there a line to be drawn?

A point I made was this: with one of my bands that put out a bunch of 7 inches and a cd the label got all the money from the sales.  We got 25 copies and could by additional copies at wholesale, but in all reality it was impossible to even recoup the costs it took to record the records to begin with unless we sold digital downloads; so we decided to put up a download site on bandcamp and within hours there were more download blogs with it up than we could even of imagined; not to mention the old ones with the burns of vinyl.  It completely neuters our avenue of "breaking even"... and if the idea to put up a blog about a band with a free download is to promote something you like, why then don't you point to the legal way of obtaining it as well (some blogs do, most don't).

If you purport to "support the scene" or "support bands" why drastically diminish their ability to financially continue?  Supporting someone on tour is one thing, but for the most part there is a lot less time spent touring and more spent playing local and recording and working on releasing material that would help you get out there anyway...  and that actually takes some money as well.

If you download only "mainstream" acts, are you doing this because you feel they have enough money and resources?  Or because you feel that DIY artists deserve more of your dollars?

Also, for people who run blogs with downloads: If a file service disables the download (probably because of copyright issues) do you post it back up?  If a band asks to take it down do you?  Or are they dicks for not letting the world have their music for free and keep posting it?

It is pretty interesting how people internalize these ideas. What are your thoughts?

I try to buy directly from bands or lables whenever possible. I'll generally but vinyl over CD's. I go to record store on occasion especially if I'm looking for used vinyl. I've only downloded a handfull of songs, ever. And only then when it's all the band had availble and did it through the bands web site.

I tend to buy vinyl directly from bands at shows, through their website or through smaller distros. I see it directly supporting the band or a smaller distro. The stuff I download is music I really don't care about owning on vinyl, it's newer pop and electronic stuff on big labels that I probably won't even be listening to 3 years from now, if I could buy a cheap electronic copy I probably would. For me it's more just sampling new bands I hear mentioned a lot in the press or by younger people and not wanting to be in the dark on today's bands, trying not to get stuck in a music era without paying attention to what's going on today. I also use stuff like Pandora for this. Or it's a download from a punk rock blog where they rip obscure and out of print vinyl and write a cool history about the band and record, show it's cover, and have a link to the rip on some Rapidshare type site. But if the old band puts out a CD comp of all their old 7"s I'm all over it, I love old 70s punk reissues on CD, especially with extensive liner notes by the band members. I have to say, music blogs with 7" rips have turned me on to a lot of great long gone bands where I've tracked down the vinyl, sometimes at high prices, after getting their songs stuck in my heads. That vinyl sale ain't going to the band in any way, sadly, but I also can't see an old KBD band reissuing their material on CD unless they know there is enough interest to have it make a profit. And many of those ex-band members have totally moved on. Like the real estate salesman that bought a leather jacket at my garage sale and said "Way back in the '70s I played in a kinda punk band called The Zippers." I was able to find a blog entry on them and jam to their power poppy 7", totally cool.

I buy cds at shows. If a band posts a link to their stuff for free I'll download it, but it usually makes me want to buy the cd from them later.

I still like cds. Some day that will make me retro, instead of just behind the times.

Just thought about this one some more: I also illegally download stuff that I purchased at some point in the past but have since lost access to.  I lost all my records and most of my CDs in 2003, so anything I owned before that I consider fair game.  However, most of that is either not available to download, or not worth listening to again, so I haven't done much in this category.

Lately, almost all of the music I've been listening to, I've been streaming. On my cell on Pandora. On my computer on Bandcamp, Facebook, etc, and now Spotify.

Pyrate Bay.otherwise, I have a stack of demo CD/ep's from nearly every band I saw in Seattle from 2006-2009.Before un-employment was at the level it is now, people were more likely to give free CDs. Some, like the Neutralboy "bootleg",Rough Chukar,Scourge Schematic, and Keg,I listen to on a regular basis. But,I am stuck in the 80s and prefer my DOA,NOMEANSNO,Black Flag(without Rollins),or MDC.

I've got Spotify Premium.  It's got pretty much 90% of all music I am looking for on there.  Premium streams at 320kb and the sound is f'n killer.  A ton of options too, well worth the $9.99 a month.  You can share playlists, and even make a collaborative one with other friends.  I can use 'offline' mode and download anything to any device / computer I have too.

i don't care if you're gay. i'm just trying to find out some marketing info. i really have no clue as to how the public gets music these days. i can't very well advise a band on how to present themselves and their product without some knowledge about this. Anyway, gay or not, how do you get your music?

I primarily buy only vinyl and mp3's.  Less on the mp3 side, but will buy a CD if that's all a band has and they're REALLY excellent/affordable.

I'm pretty much with Dan on this except for new bands and releases that I want digital copies I will buy them. If it is something way out of print and there is little hope of finding it for a reasonable price I will download it. Pretty much I know I have a decent job and can afford to buy music so I do.

I rarely buy cds from bands anymore but will certainly buy vinyl.

Pointless, perhaps. But,I have met you several times and am pretty sure you are not homophobic. Faggy may not be the best choice of words. If you want to disrupt this thread, let me know and I will text Jay66 or/and Anthony M and they will leave the equally useless threads on SPO about immigration and the amazingly bad "How I became punk" thread for a few minutes and derail this thread.Seriously,I see what Mr.Toast is asking. But,I have assisted with promoting more shows then I can list and sadly, most demo CD's given out seem to end up on the bar or tables at the venue they are distributed at. House shows are where one would want to give CD's at.People are generally more interested for some reason.I might suggest giving out free download cards. If they are discarded, the cost is minimal and if used,it provides a link to further contact info. But,this thread would be as relevant as if I started a discussion as to whether people read the handbills I give them or actually read texts sent to them about shows.Predicting which form of promotion will be received best is pointless without context.Venue?House?Bar?
