what are you looking for in a good punk/photo blog?
« on: April 08, 2009, 02:10:22 PM »

I know there are a bunch of punk photographers posting here, I've seen your threads and sites. So this is a good place to ask.

I had an quite regularly updated blog for a bunch of years in 2002-2007. My posts got shorter and more erratic over time. So I pretty much stopped writing entries. At the same time I had gotten more and more into photography and kept posting new galleries from all the shows I've been to. And that's a lot. Yet its just "presented without comment" and just stacks of images. Its good for what it is, but I feel I need to do more. Put the photos in context and tell their stories. Chose the good ones to present instead of doing the "here's 100 images from last nights show" thing. Somehow I have a hard time getting this started. I have a domain and enough skills to built a site.

So here's my question: What are you looking for in a good punk/photo blog? Things to do/avoid.

Thx, Marc

one of the problems I ran into when I was writing some sample entries was me trying to say too much about the bands and my personal history with em. At least that was my own impression.

Try picking your best 5 photos and only posting those. Put titles on them, and then write very short descriptions of what's going on and how you got the shot. Along the lines of "Bill had just finished this killer guitar solo when he leaned into the camera. I love it when they do that..." That's what I've been trying to do lately, but the creativity bag is only so big... it can be tough to keep everything upbeat and professional. http://thunderbirdphotos.wordpress.com/

Who it is, how the band sets up, or what the scene is. That's what text I want to see. Why is it interesting?

I can't necessarily see the point of labeling every photo. Let's say you shoot the same band 5 times. You've already identified them in the past, the band set up is mostly the same...unless the band is doing something different, it's going to be different based on your angle, the lighting, and the venue. The crowd is different, but is that what you're looking for?

I'll include a link to examples on what I did, at the last of the Even in Blackouts shows:

(My comments: labeled band members, talked about sombreros, gave a feel about the different locations. I was borrowing a friend's fast lens, but lacked the necessary practice in low-light.)
