Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland
« on: March 03, 2010, 09:27:56 AM »

Am I the only one who has no interest in seeing this movie?  Tim Burton has made 2 kind of 'meh' movies, which were beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands.  Everything else has been crap that people seem to love because of the 'look' of the movies and nothing else.  He ruined Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  He's going to ruin Alice in Wonderland as well.  I can't believe people get excited about this crap.  Don't even get me started on the Nightmare before Christmas crap.  What a load of junk.

imdb reminded me that Batman and PeeWees big adventure were great too.  But that's about it.  What has he done lately?  Ruined my favorite things.

Let's not forget Mars Attacks! and Ed Wood.  And didn't he have something to do with Cabin Boy?!?  Also I thought Big Fish was a real good flick.

Okay, but what lately?  Who keeps giving this dude a free pass?  Pee Wee's Big Adventure is great, but in no way gives someone a free pass!

Tim Burton's good films:
Big Fish
Sleepy Hollow
Ed Wood
Batman
Batman Returns
Edward Scissorhands
Beetlejuice
Pee Wee's Big Adventure
Frankenweenie

Bad Films:
Chocolate Factory
Planet of the Apes
Mars Attacks (Not really bad, but not really good either)
Sweeny Todd
Corpse Bride

Overall that's a pretty good track record.

And he didn't direct Nightmare before x-mas, he just produced it.

I think I'm the only one that actually liked the Planet of the Apes remake.

I may go see Alice in Wonderland, the 3-D preview before Avatar looked pretty amazing. But I have a feeling it will be visually cool with awesome animation and 3-D, and a weak story line. The European "Alice" done with puppetry that came out in the '80s was totally amazing if you haven't seen it, super creep and weird, I saw it on acid and loved it.

Mars Attacks may be his BEST movie next to big fish! Strange part is I never realized those flicks were made by him!

Brian pretty much nailed it with that list. It seems anything he does now is aimed at overweight goth chicks who need more sweeney todd hoodies than anyone can ever imagine.

PS. Why do fat chicks think it's hot to wear cat ears and dress up like fucking clowns?

Keep in mind that this movie is not based on the book by Lewis Carol. This story takes place when Alice returns to Wonderland many years later.

Mars Attacks was a lot of really funny scenes with little to no actual plot thread tying the events together.  Always good to see marty mcfly in a movie though

The ending of Mars Attacks with Tom Jones singing and the birds dancing makes it and awesome movie. The rest is all just sprinkles on the frosting.

Not that I was gonna run out to see it to begin with, but what really turns me off from it is the soundtrack - instead of a score or finding songs that actually fit the movie, they just got a bunch of 'cool' or 'edgy' 'alternative rock billboard toppers.'  It looks like another crummy volume for Rock Band or something:

1. “Alice (Underground)” performed by Avril Lavigne
2. “The Poison” performed by The All-American Rejects
3. “The Technicolor Phase” performed by Owl City
4. “Her Name Is Alice” performed by Shinedown
5. “Painting Flowers” performed by All Time Low
6. “Where’s My Angel” performed by Metro Station
7. “Strange” performed by Tokio Hotel and Kerli
8. “Follow Me Down” performed by 3OH!3 featuring Neon Hitch
9. “Very Good Advice” performed by Robert Smith
10. “In Transit” performed by Mark Hoppus with Pete Wentz
11. “Welcome to Mystery” performed by Plain White T’s
12. “Tea Party” performed by Kerli
13. “The Lobster Quadrille” performed by Franz Ferdinand
14. “Running Out of Time” performed by Motion City Soundtrack
15. “Fell Down a Hole” performed by Wolfmother
16. “White Rabbit” performed by Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

After actually looking at the song titles, it looks like these are probably original songs for the movie, but its still stupid.

I almost edited my post to change produced to wrote and produced, but I was curious to see if anyone would catch it.

And even though the film says "Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas" the film actually belongs to Henry Selick, probably one of the best stop motion animators around.  He also directed Monkeybone, which should have been awesome, but studio involvement ruined.

He didn't write the screenplay, just the (different in many ways) story it was based on.  That's like saying that the Lord of the Rings movies are "Tolkien's films".  Burton just likes to take credit for it because it became incredibly popular.

From chud.com....

"I had heard early reports that Alice in Wonderland was unwatchably bad, an unmitigated disaster. It's not - it's just regular terrible. Sloppy and stupid and filled with an endless string of wrongheaded decisions, the movie's a mess and deserves to fail, but it never rises to that exquisite level of true horror. It's a bore, an affront to anyone who is even familiar with the concept of Lewis Carroll and his books, but in the end it's banal. And I mean that - totally banal in the end, with Alice using her experiences in Wonderland to become a fucking businesswoman. The ending of the movie plays like Tim Burton making peace with the fact that he's no longer an artist, he's now a content provider for Hot Topic."

The full review on Chud is pretty hilarious, they rip it to shreds. And their review is echoed in the comments by other people that saw previews, even the 3-D isn't supposed to be great since it was really shot to be a 2-D movie. No way I'm seeing it in the theater now.

I liked the remake, but definitely not as much as I liked the original.
