first time in the studio
« on: December 15, 2009, 12:40:49 PM »

My band went in the studio for the first time over the weekend. I must say it was an amazing experience for me. We laid down 5 tracks and it went really well! I was feeling pretty bad when the engineer told Aaron (our guitar dude) to come out of the booth when he was laying down his vocals. Aaron can't sing to save his life. So we ended up having Mike Moen from Neutralboy do the majority of our back up vox. All-in-all we definitely got our moneys worth. Cant wait to hear the shit.

You should have called me up for backing vox.  It could have looked like this:

Also, make sure you pass me a copy of this thing when you're done.  What is your intentions for it?

awesome! congrats dude!  i love recording, especially the vocals. soooo fun!  it can be a bit nerve racking and tedious, but that only makes the finished product that much better.

I agree! This engineer that we worked with made sure it was tits! A lot of "that was good...but I think you can do it better".

you want an engineer to be critical.  i love working with chris pierce.  he will make us redo it a billion times until we get it right.  he's also a great producer and without him our records would not sound as good.

I wish I was closer to NJ.  I would do EVERYTHING with Pierce.  I'm pretty sure he told me we could have free studio time when I got drunk with him and JJ Nobody last year.

This engineer was critical in an AWESOME way. We even did some on the spot changes to a couple of our songs that he suggested and it turned out RAD!

can't wait to hear it!

a good producer/engineer actually produces/engineers.  if a producer/engineer tells you every take is rocking, kick them in the face!

Here's the thing, studios are for pussies. Record using only a tooth brush then I'll be impressed.

I found a cool wacky voice machine yesterday at Toys 'R' Us. We will record our full length on this.

sometimes you gotta put your foot down. I learned this the hard way. We recorded at Audio Confusion in Mesa,Arizona I think that's where it was. With Jalipaz who recorded some of the Andrew Jackson Jihad stuff. that dude rules but the vocals didnt sound pushed like I wanted them too. sounded pretty week. the guitars sound amazing. Just wish we had more time to redo stuff.those recordings will just hide in the vault though.

he was talking three different recording sessions!  Not just tracks! We were having trouble getting a good tone!  That and tyler at the time did not know what he was doing and we were trying to record some songs that weren't entirely ready!  Then we almost killed each other

If you are going for a raw feel then Egg Studio is great. Snap Crackle and Pop is Johnny Sangster's studio and if you can get in there it is worth it. He has a great ear and *may* help with backing vocals ( see Makers, Cute Lepers, he is a manangel)!

Seriously, spend a weekend at Egg and it will fucking sound kick ass.

Yeah, but that's how we learn. I took away a lot from those sessions, more so in regards to things NOT TO DO. Punk rock is hard to make sound good.

I'm stoked because for the first time in my 10+ years of recording, Conrads schedule matched up with our schedule and we're actually recording there in February!  STOKED!

This is the reason we record all of our stuff our selves. There aren't many engineer/producers out there that are going to "get" what we're trying to do. Althoug I'd love to try recording with Jack just to see what he could do with it.
