Propagandhi - Supporting Caste
« on: April 02, 2009, 03:48:41 PM »

The new Propagandhi is a must have for lovers of punk rock.  Propagandhi has always, and will always be one of the greatest punk bands to every play music.  Granted, their new album dives into some more metal sounding songs at times, its still one of the best albums of the this year...until the new Wilhelm record drops

Respectfully disagree.  I was seriously disappointed in this album.  Maybe it is because I am a sucker for How to Clean Everything (which is a little poppier), but I thought that this album was boring and inconsistent.

I am looking forward to the new Wilhelm Scream album as well!

I second (or third) the love for older Propagandhi. I just never really got into the last few albums. Tahoe Jeff really loved when I took him to eat a burger and they played that record in the burger place.

NEW Propagandhi! Constantly improving upon their past work. I absolutely love that they also seem to thrive on the fact that they've alienated a lot of people who like their old shit but they're doing what they want. John K didn't fit. Weakerthans is such a great band (better than prop? if the mood strikes). I think to properly "go with the band" to where they've chosen to go musically you might have to have an appreciation for old thrash metal..at least i think it helps.
but as far as the Supporting Caste goes...i'm still not sure if it's as good as Potemkin City Limits. That record didn't leave the player for weeks. I really like a bunch of songs on this, but perhaps it's going to grow on me where PCL immediately hit me. just my two cents.

Most definitely! PCL may be their best work, but it didnt get promoted properly and I read an interview with chris hannah and he said that a of prop fans didnt even know PCL ever came out!  Their new album is really different and normally I dont care for the thrashier music but the lyrics are ridiculous. their musicianship and ability to maneuver their guitars the way they do in the timing and rhythms that they do on this album are just incredible.

How To Clean Everything was rad for its time, but if they were still playing that kinda music I probably wouldnt have as much love and respect for them...but maybe it wouldnt take them 4 years between every fucking album

their musicianship

I keep hearing people praising the "musicianship" and while I don't deny it, I think its something that ranks rather low on my list of things I find important in a punk band. Also I prefer not to hear it in a sense that a good song will be even better if done technically well, but it should not be great only because its technically ambitious, thats metal shit. (e.g. a band like the Ergs! totally makes me pumping fists and sing my heart out, and also I can say "wow thats a great bass line", but I'd still pumping fists without the bassline)

"Supporting Caste" blew me away. It's truly a stellar piece of work. This is easily the best thing in punk music since Wilhelm put out "Career Suicide."

As for the 'punk v. quality' argument, I don't think they're too concerned about being 'punk enough' for the purists. This is music for musicians and their evolution has been something quite magical.

i've been listening to Propagandhi since i was 17(i'm 35 now). their music has always and will forever rock, but it's the content and their values which make this group who they are(more than Wilhelm or most other bands). i went vegan because of them. i volunteer my time to East African refugees 'cuz of them. and i think they want people to pick up on that kind of stuff, moreso than their riffs and time changes. first thing i read are the lyrics, and they are telling it like it is more than ever. i'm sure ya'll have heard Todd's old bands, but if you haven't and want to hear more meaning music, check out I Spy and Swallowing Shit.

Ya man the Lyrics on Supporting Caste are mind blowingly sad and real.  You can really tell that they are older and have been through and seen a lot of shit. The only people that I know that don't like the lyrics on this album is because they don't understand the vocabulary haha

Hells yeah! There is a discussion about this record over in the releases section! A lot of people don't like that they learned how to play their instruments

I definitely can't decide what their best album is, but so far this new record is making me feel pretty damn happy about music in general, thought provoking shit, it is.

Supporting Caste is possibly my favorite Propagandhi album, next to either Less talk, More Rock or Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes. I listen to mostly pop-punk, but propagandhi is a band where I actually like their harder, thrashier stuff better than the poppy stuff.

I got into them when Today's Empire, Tomorrow's Ashes came out, and went backwards from there. I admit I didn't listen to Potemkin a lot, but I didn't dislike it or anything.

So I listened to this new one tonight. I felt nothing after I did so. I could just be "over" this band, or I could just need to give it another listen. But after a response like that, I don't know that I'll ever feel the desire to. Oh well.

I know most people dont do this anymore, but if you sit down and listen go supporting caste with lyrics and read along, this is some serious fucking shit.  Although its not my favorite record at all, it some heavy shit to take in.

I realized that is part of my problem while I was listening to this record. I'm the kind of person that, no matter how clearly a singer sings, I cannot understand lyrics unless I'm reading them on paper. And I downloaded this records months ago, so I obviously have no lyric sheet.
