British Programs
« on: November 23, 2009, 03:59:39 PM »

Thanks to Netflix, I have finished watching all seasons to date of The IT Crowd and Peep Show.  These sitcoms are incredible!  Anybody seen these and happen to know any others to recommend?

Warm Springs = Pretty damn good. 4 ladies who met in prison are on the run with stolen money, when they hold up in a small British town, get involved in running an Inn, and all kinds of hijinx follow. I downloaded the first season.

Survivors = Awesome. This is a BBC Series that came out in the late '70s that they are re-doing, I just watched all of season one in the past two weeks. A virus kills off most of the world, a small group of diverse survivors band together for protection and survival. No zombies or anything, it's more about scrounging for resources and confrontations with other survivors.

The Young Ones is awesome, it used to be on MTV back in the day, there's a DVD with all the episodes on it. Motorhead, Madness and The Damned play in their living room in episodes. A hippie, an anarchist, a douchebag, and a metal/punk guy all live in a house together.

The BBC produced Sherlock Holmes serries, while not a sitcom, is well worth watching. All episodes follow the books almost exactly and the guy who plays Holmes is amazing.

The original series The Prisoner! They're showing it, as well as the new American remake on AMC channel. I actually think the new American one is pretty damned good. Sir Ian McKellan is in it, that goes does not suck.

My Hero is pretty silly. Of course Monty Python's Flying Circus is tip top!

If you have Comcast, it looks like AMC has both the original and the remake on demand

Peep Show is the best sitcom ever. Case closed.

IT Crowd is hilarious.

Yes [Prime] Minister.

Black Adder.

The Mighty Boosh is hilarious though it might leave you a bit confused.

Mr. Bean.

Coupling is a very funny sex sitcom. Imagine British Friends.

Are You Being Served.

Faulty Towers: seriously, the fire drill may be one of the greatest acts of comedy ever committed by mankind.

Red Dwarf, need I comment further?

Young Ones is one of the top ten TV shows eve, the world's first live action cartoon, with awesome music.

Monty Python (if I need explain this this you are an asshole).

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy miniseries.

And, as if it needs any more support, there happens to be this little science fiction series, it called Dr. Who. Its the best sci-fi ever.

This is coming from the (likely) biggest nerd on NWPB. The Doctor edges out even Star Trek (barely).]

I'm done. But! British TV > American TV.

FUCK!

I forgot the Prisoner.

The Avengers.

And!

The Saint.

I got caught up in BBC comedy series....

I think I might be alone in finding both Hitchhiker's Guide and Red Dwarf a little too slow moving and not funny. I watched a Red Dwarf marathon of about 12 episodes to try to get into it and I felt like while there were funny parts, that a lot of it was pretty tedious.

Yes it is!  I still don't find the US version good at all.  I've tried watching it like 3 different times and I can't help but think, "this was way better on the original version" or "the british character of this guy is way better."  What is America's obsession with remaking these great shows - what's wrong with just airing the original?  Has there ever been a cover band that was better than the original band?

The US version of The Office is for dumb ignorant Americans who need to be spoon-fed humor with applause signs.
