I'm a Mac!

But really, this is a tough question.  I'm a guy who hate's homophobic and racist terms, but uses them for funnies sometimes.  I'm a hypocrite!

I'm not PC by any definition but I do think that there are some words that just don't need to be used again, at all, by anyone.

I mean, I cant imagine a single circumstance where I'd feel like I just really couldn't express what I needed to without using the word "n*i*g*g*e*r". I have no use for that word at all and I can't see how anyone else would have any use for it either.

the stance i take is this. i dont say them, or like hearing them in public. now i have been known to make a joke out of the old f-word with close friends. but in reality i am making a satirical joke on people that say the word seriously when i do so.

the argument of freedom of speech to justify saying these words is ridiculous. it may give you the legal right to say them but it doesn't make it ok.

It really depends on what you mean by "politically correct."  It's such a loaded term that I would guess that even people who consistently use PC language would shy away from using it to describe themselves.

That said, racist/homophobic/sexist language doesn't fly with me at all.  If that's "being PC" then okay, I'm PC.  I just consider it being a decent human being.

The term itself isn't loaded... most terms considered to be P.C. are.

/that's/ what being PC is.
Racist/homophobic/sexist language can(and is, most of the time) be PC.

From the context, I'd go with "faggot". Which happens to mean cigarette in the UK.

Especially since mentally retarded is an actual medical term.

I do my best not to use/make any inappropriate words/jokes.

I'm not very PC, I swear a lot and sometimes make sexist jokes, only they are me pretending like I'm being sexist and it's obvious, so it's more making fun redneck attitudes than anything else. Similarly friends joke around about whose drinking the gayest drink when someone is drinking white wine and another a Michelobe Ultra and that doesn't offend me at all (my money is on the white wine BTW). And my gay friends are way more un-PC than anyone I know, which I've always thought was odd, but funny. Similarly my Jewish friends I play poker with love to joke around the Jewish media cabal and being good with money. I swear liberal white west coast folks worry much more this shit than anyone else. *But* I would never use the n-word or call someone a f*g (funny how if you spell it out the filter puts in fun guy, good one). Or call someone any type of racially/gender/orientation type of insult. But I do think it's OK to joke about them to some extent and appreciate comedians that can walk the line and not cross it. Lisa Lampenelli though, I can't handle her schtick, that's way too far over the line for my delicate white liberal ears.

I with Dan on this whole post.

I am trying to break the habit of calling stuff "gay" as a derogatory term. It's really dumb and it makes no sense that I would do it, I don't know how/why I ever started.

While someone else said that mental retardation is a medical term, if you call someone with special needs a "retard" you're either incredibly ignorant or a fucking asshole. Regardless of the clinical term of "mental retardation," the term "retard" (e.g. "look at that retard," "you're a retard," etc.) has existed as a slur for those with developmental or intellectual delays for decades--so when you're consciously using the word, you should know it comes with a history of bigoted usage. Also, despite your intentions when saying a word, it's still also open to how it is interpreted by those around you. That word can trigger some very ugly and negative feelings/reactions in people who might have reason to take offense to it, and most of the time you wouldn't know those reasons when you just meet someone. If you ever called someone a "retard" in front of me my knee-jerk reaction would be to want to strangle you. And that's not me being "pc"--that's the instinctive red curtain that drops in front of my eyes when I hear that word. I have reasons and I think it would be hard to invalidate them.

I don't subscribe to all the beliefs of the "politically correct." A lot of it is a product of misinformed white liberal guilt. But if you don't respect or listen to someone who's consciously trying to create a safe space with their choice in language, than I'm sorry, I have a hard time listening to or respecting your reasons to do such.

I look at it this way: swear all the time, just don't be a dick and try to offend people, unless they need to be offended. If you think that someone's something that they can't help (race, sexual orientation, nationality, etc) is grounds for them being offended, though, that makes you a giant fuck.

That being said, though I forgot something. Stuff people can control and make the conscious choice to think or do, religion, politics, being an asshole, etc. are fair game. I will gladly taunt a Christian or a Republican (for but two obvious and easy examples) because of what they think. Why? Because I think they're wrong, and in their wrongness they are making the world a worse place.

I like to use words like "niggardly" because only simpletons think it's an epithet. I like laughing at stupid people.

Doesn't it just mean "measly"? I'd ask why stir the pot, but it's you. Stir away.

you though- Fuck that. The whole aim of PC is to void a term of any and all emotion. Sterile language doesn't convey enough information. I'm not saying that every word or phrase you utter needed to be loaded, but realize that emotion control is the first step in people control- Eric Blair had a very poignant look at this concept in "1984". I suggest you fucking read it.
