10 records to get you through another Fall...
« on: September 29, 2009, 10:00:11 AM »

So...clearly it is Fall now judging by how gray and cold it has been. I figured I would start a thread where we can share our get you through Fall top 10's. Let's get warm with some of our favorites...shall we? Let's meet up for coffee/Irish Coffee and trade mixes and our current Fall sucks stories...

1. Lawrence Arms "Apathy and Exhaustion"-Depressing, moody themes and dark lyrics, overall just perfect for those dark days and apathetic feelings. Think Dear You esk Jawbreaker. My favorite seasonal Gem!

2. Strike Anywhere "Iron Front"-A get off your ass and do something sort of record, gets you amped up and ready to hit the streets.

3. The Ghost "This is a hospital" Fugazi influenced post-punk with some balls and some great lyrics! Record hits on all moods. Reminds you that originality can still be new and fresh even though it's harder to find.

4. Santiago "Rosenburg's After Dark"-Think east bay punk meets a musical set to the theme of small town. Best record you have never heard!

5. Bright Eyes "Lifted"- I feel like this record captures Fall's mood well, Big and Sonic and kind of air-y.Perfect for coffee and cigarettes on a porch at dusk.

6. The Broadways "Broken Star" - One of my all time favorite records, pre Lawrence Arms/Honor System goodness think Crimpshrine with better production. Political dirty punk that helps you deal with a rainy commute.

7. Discount "Crash Diagnostic" In my opinion the best of Discount's records with good production and super interesting song structures it's sure to keep you bouncing through the puddles...

8. Fifteen "Buzz"-Standard East Bay awesomeness by people who have more problems then you, post Crimpshrine Jeff Ott-ness with more social commentary and self awareness. Kick heroin to this...

9. Heartsounds "Until We Surrender"-girl/guy vocals similar to Fifth Hour Hero but faster and NEW. and somewhat romantic in a weird way...like a ex. girlfriend/boyfriend.

10. Hot New Mexicans "It's Called Leaning Back"-Think The Strokes meets southern folk punk but way better. Garage-ish and sing along's a plenty. I feel like this is the it's not really Fall and I refuse to get on board with the seasons record...

You're really emo Lucas.

I don't know if I can name 10, but I'd say:

the Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site
the Weakerthans - Reunion Tour
Jets to Brazil - Perfecting Loneliness
Prince - Purple Rain
Bob Dylan - Greatest Hits I
Bob Dylan - Greatest Hits II

I was gonna throw some Weakerthans on this list but I felt like that was too "EMO" of me. Looks like you out "EMO" me Chris. Good Work.

That's not even out yet, is it?
I think I will take your advice and see how it goes. I'm not very good at getting through the winter.

Albums 1 and 2 strike my fancy.

PS- I LOVE STRIKE ANYWHERE. I loved them even more when they played Hell's Kitchen for 7 bucks.

Well, we all live here for a reason...and it's surely not the sun ("...and don't call me Shirley"). C'mon guys/gals stop being too cool for school and throw down a top ten!

Everyone's picks sound more like Fall picks, and considering Fall just started.... I'm confused. I have vastly different lists for Fall and Winter. Someone clear this up for me please. ???

I'm not organized enough to coordinate my music to the seasons.

But, if I were, I'd think Fall would be more rockin' music to pump you up to get you out of the house on a rainy windy night and Winter music would be more relaxin' stuff to listen to over the holiday while you sip hot totties with the fam by a warm fire while it snows outside. And that Winter image it totally not punk rock.

ah ha! Good point...Duly Noted. I would like to now clarify my post to state that this is my top ten for Fall/leading into Winter. My dead of Winter top ten will be much more gloomy and depressive. Carry On.

Exactly.

I'll have to think on my list. The three bands I always inadvertently start listening to a lot as soon as Fall rolls around are the Misfits, Type O Negative, and the Ghastly Ones.

That Cardinal Sin record is great. I always put songs off that record and their first E/P on mixed tapes for people.
...Jawbreaker's "24 hr revenge" is a good one for fall too. Nice list!

I really like Four Cornered Night, I'm glad you chose that one! That Neutral Milk Hotel record is the jam too. Godspeed is a great band to have playing in the background while you go to sleep.

in on particular order and some probably remind me of the fall more than getting me through it.

Kill Your Idols - From Companionship to Competition
The Explosion- Flash Flash Flash
And You Will Know Us... - Worlds Apart
Vic Ruggiero - Livin' in Sin
The Beltones - On Deaf Ears
American Steel - Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts
Nothington - Roads, Bridges, and Ruins
Pietasters - All Day
Joe Strummer - Global a Go Go
Jawbreaker - 24 Hr.

Maybe the new DTM will be a hold over too and NMH - In an Aeroplane... - definitely reminds me of fall!

The Explosion- Flash Flash Flash

What happened to this band? Their first two EPs were great, than they turned to crap.

Half the band left to be in the Loved Ones.  This was a good choice.  Have you heard the Loved ones Dan?  I think you might really like them.

The Loved Ones are a little too in the over-produced pop punk vein for me. I liked The Explosion when they sounded more street punk (songs like "Hero" and "Out Tonight" off their Jade Tree ep) and I like pop punk when it's less-produced and snotty.

yeah Black Tape is not good.  I'm not even sure half of them are in Loved Ones anymore...when they opened for Gaslight they were a trio and needing to work on being a three piece again.
