You do realize the only way he can stagger times legally is by making venues close earlier, he can't let them stay open later. And this is what scares me, what if he says live music venues must close at 1am? I just don't think gov't and the LCB should be messing with making some venues close earlier than others.

the way i read it it - and what the seattle NMA is pushing for - is letting some bars close LATER than 2am.
that's why the city would need to work w/ the liqour control board.

This would be awesome and terrible at the same time.  On a weekend, it would rule, but a Wednesday night, having a show roll until 3 or whatever, you can count me out.

WAC 314-11-070:
(2) A local government subdivision may fix later opening hours or earlier closing hours than those specified in this rule, so long as the hours apply to all licensed premises in the local government subdivision's jurisdiction. See WAC 314-12-215(3) for exceptions when a premises is in a board recognized alcohol impact area.

Easy there!  I was drinking a 40 oz bottle when I wrote that.  Hype is like a boomerang, and your records, keeps coming back after I throw them away!

this doesn't mean the laws in olympia can not be changed.

i really do not expect mcginn to actually do most of what he promises, but it does feel good to have a local politician try to appeal to me (and people like me) as opposed to tring to make night life the boogy man.

running bands until 3am?
ugh, no.
but i would love to option of letting people hang out until 3 so they could finish their drinks.
hell, even if it was easier to get an exemption so we could stay open until 3am even w/o serving any more booze, just to ease things on those busy nights.

For reals. The last bus to my hood leaves downtown around 12:50pm. Last time I tried to take a bus home at night I caught one from Ballard to the U-District only to find even the 70s, major bus runs, had all stopped running out of the U-District by 1:10am. It's almost like Metro doesn't want to deal with drunks, so they shut most bus runs down and hour or two before the bars close.

The last Light Rail from downtown back to my neighborhood leaves at like 12:30. Which means I have to get from wherever I am (most likely Capitol Hill, but you know....) to downtown before that. Totally bogus.

I accept more rides from drunk people than I should have to.

Word.  I'm glad we're on the same page.  I know I've been kicked out of the Funhouse at what I thought was 10 PM, but was actually 1:45 or so AM.  I wasn't ready to be done!!

This is true, although Seattle Mayors traditionally haven't had a lot of sway in Olympia politics.

i really do not expect mcginn to actually do most of what he promises, but it does feel good to have a local politician try to appeal to me (and people like me) as opposed to tring to make night life the boogy man.

Agreed. Although I'd put money that McGinn really knows very little about the nightlife/music scene/club problems beyond what Dave Meinert has told him and written for him. And that shit worries me, because Meinert usually tries to sway policy to benefit himself and his friends, not the greater indie music community. He was totally supportive of AEG buying the Showboxes and being contracted in to book the stadium at Bumbershoot, which I think really sucks. He's tight with the owners/bookers of the older more established rock clubs, One Reel, large promo companies, etc. And it's not really in those clubs and promoter's interest for most of the venues we all go to be successful.

I think McGinn seems like a breath of fresh air and is saying the right things to appeal to music fans, and I'm definitely voting for him, I'm just not sure it's genuine or just an appeal for votes. And I'm super weary of more government involvement in the music scene. I'd really like to see less regulation and a more hands off approach that lets smaller and new clubs grow and flourish throughout the city and allows musicians and artists to create on their own without looking over their shoulder at what some music commission or music office might do to them next.

How are Neighbors and Noc Noc currently be able to do just this? Shit, at 2am there is a huge line to get into Neighbors, I bet a couple hundred people pay cover just to dance and hang out in a club for another hour after the bars close.
