this doesn't mean the laws in olympia can not be changed.
This is true, although Seattle Mayors traditionally haven't had a lot of sway in Olympia politics.
i really do not expect mcginn to actually do most of what he promises, but it does feel good to have a local politician try to appeal to me (and people like me) as opposed to tring to make night life the boogy man.
Agreed. Although I'd put money that McGinn really knows very little about the nightlife/music scene/club problems beyond what Dave Meinert has told him and written for him. And that shit worries me, because Meinert usually tries to sway policy to benefit himself and his friends, not the greater indie music community. He was totally supportive of AEG buying the Showboxes and being contracted in to book the stadium at Bumbershoot, which I think really sucks. He's tight with the owners/bookers of the older more established rock clubs, One Reel, large promo companies, etc. And it's not really in those clubs and promoter's interest for most of the venues we all go to be successful.
I think McGinn seems like a breath of fresh air and is saying the right things to appeal to music fans, and I'm definitely voting for him, I'm just not sure it's genuine or just an appeal for votes. And I'm super weary of more government involvement in the music scene. I'd really like to see less regulation and a more hands off approach that lets smaller and new clubs grow and flourish throughout the city and allows musicians and artists to create on their own without looking over their shoulder at what some music commission or music office might do to them next.
