Mayoral canidate Mike McGinn's Music Policy
« on: September 23, 2009, 07:30:16 PM »

while i still think his take on the alaska way viaduct is off, looking at this swayed me & now he has my vote -

http://mcginnformayor.com/issues-music-and-nightlife/

a couple that i like are -

• To help cut down on incidents after establishments close, the city should work with the state Liquor Control Board to encourage staggered closing times.

• To help cut down on drinking and driving, transportation choices such as light rail, taxi service, and buses need to be accessible until at least 3 a.m.

The only problem I have is he seems to almost want to step up government's role in the music scene, rather than dropping some of the restrictions and just stepping back. Dave Mienert sent out this press release last night and I swear Mienert wrote all the music and nightlife stuff. And it was eerily similar to Mienert's support of Nickel's music policies which came back to bite everyone on the ass. I definitely like McGinn and will vote for him, but with some trepidation. I favor smaller government and think government has no place in the music community. Anarchy burger, hold the government!

You do realize the only way he can stagger times legally is by making venues close earlier, he can't let them stay open later. And this is what scares me, what if he says live music venues must close at 1am? I just don't think gov't and the LCB should be messing with making some venues close earlier than others.

Let's not even get started on Dave Meinert, but I assure you, I will be a bug in his ear if he gets elected. no way will i allow dave to control him.

Most of the "venues" I frequent are illegal anyway. If there's a way I can get home via public transit after fucking midnight in this city, I WANT THAT.

For reals. The last bus to my hood leaves downtown around 12:50pm. Last time I tried to take a bus home at night I caught one from Ballard to the U-District only to find even the 70s, major bus runs, had all stopped running out of the U-District by 1:10am. It's almost like Metro doesn't want to deal with drunks, so they shut most bus runs down and hour or two before the bars close.

Can you blame them?  It's like shoving a dozen random drunk people in a room for a half an hour and seeing what happens.  Total powder keg....but a powder keg I'd like to ride on.

yes that was clearly my point. or maybe it was that that was really only time i would go to ballard or have ever gone to ballard save for a lucero show and a business meeting. and you should probably say PUT on shows, because they are for the most part few and far between now.
